Finding a missing or bad link that leads to a ‘page not found’ error reflects badly on any website. It’s especially frustrating if the link was to an external site, out of your control, as the visitor does not necessarily know who’s at fault.
Morello helps with this by providing a central link repository, called the Link Roster. Any external link added to a page gets included in the roster, all the links in the roster are checked, quickly giving the page author feedback that they have entered the link incorrectly or that the site is down.
If the Link Roster subsequently finds that a good link is now bad, then the link is not displayed on the page, until the author fixes it. A report can be run, regularly keeping the authors up to date with the status of the links being used.
The Link Roster can also be used to create links to other content items in the Morello repository and will always maintain the link, even if that content item is moved. If the content item is deleted or changes state so that it is no longer viewable, then the reference to it in the page disappears automatically.
